Abstract (CPANDA): The 1973 Americans and the Arts study was the first in a series of studies measuring participation in and attitudes about the arts and arts in education. Topics include childhood arts exposure, current arts participation, leisure activities, and attitudes regarding arts and arts funding.

Methodology (CPANDA) : This study was administered by face-to-face interviews with 3005 respondents selected from the U.S. population 16 years and over. Survey sampling differences preclude comparisons with measures of arts participation from the 1980, 1984, 1987, and 1992 Americans and the Arts studies which used telephone interviewing.
