Abstract (CPANDA): One of 26 local area surveys in the Knight Foundation's Community Indicators Project, this survey measured Long Beach residents' civic engagement and attitudes concerning seven topic areas: education, arts and culture, children and social welfare, community development, homelessness, literacy, and citizenship. Questions relating specifically to arts and culture include frequency of attendance at arts events or museums, satisfaction with arts and cultural opportunities, and satisfaction with the performance of local cultural institutions. The interview protocol for each local area survey was nearly identical to the protocol for the national survey also conducted for this project. The Community Indicators Project was undertaken to document the social health of the 26 communities in which the Knight brothers published newspapers. The study was conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates and funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Abstract (Author):
Methodology (CPANDA) : Princeton Survey Research Associates conducted telephone interviews with a representative sample of 802 adults (18+) living in telephone households in Long Beach, California. The interviews were conducted from March 17 through April 4, 1999. The sample was based on random digit dialing of telephone numbers within telephone exchanges serving zip codes 90801-90810, 90813-90815, and 90853. Interviews were conducted in either English or Spanish, according to the preference of the respondent. Non-response weighting adjustments were not calculated for this data because reliable demographic weighting parameters were unavailable. The response rate for the survey was 35%.
